Shell house is a complex that is a blend of modern design with practicality, aiming for both beauty and functionality. The complex consists of two buildings: a straightforward west-facing three-storied rectangular office building that is simple and organized, floating on a double-height base, connected to an east-facing service block by a sculptural concrete spiral staircase. This staircase adds a dynamic feature seen periodically in his work. The interconnected buildings create a harmony that is rare in office buildings, modern design with practicality.
The 78,000 square foot Shell house features a concrete structure with a fair-face facade, which is suitable for Karachi’s gritty and windy environment. Different applications of fair-face concrete were done on the building, enhancing the facade’s visual interest. It’s like they’re saying, “Let’s make something that looks good but also works well in this city. The design approach emphasizes creating something aesthetically pleasing yet functional and durable, fitting well within its surroundings.
The design incorporates an asymmetrical L-shaped plan and a right-angled entrance. It considers climate with inclined windows on sides and has divided vertical circulation. The facade has two entrances, different elevations, and minor projections on the concrete with the landscape more horizontally integrated than vertical.
Overall, Shell house showcases how architecture can be both visually appealing and well-suited to its surroundings, making it a standout example of contemporary design.
Award-Winning Design:
The Karachi Development Authority awarded it the “Best Office Building Since Partition” in 1989, solidifying its status as a landmark in architectural design. Overall, Shell House demonstrates that architecture can successfully blend style with function, making it a noteworthy example of contemporary design.
