The Islamic Chamber of Commerce Industry & Agriculture (ICCIA) is an internationally funded institution that represents the private sector of 57 Islamic countries. The objective of having its head-quarters in Karachi was to establish it as a self-financed organization.
For design, HFA focused on the idea of Islamic architecture and symmetrical planning as a result, the design was harmonious and well-organized, echoing the Islamic geometric principles often observed in mosques and other religious buildings. Also, our design uniquely featured a beautiful entry driveway that welcomed visitors and set the mood for the full architectural experience.
The ICCIA building’s simple ‘U’ shaped plan unfolds on elevation, contributing to its harmonious and easy to follow layout. For the façade, HFA’s trademark concrete fair face was used; and for the touch of Islamic architecture, we built custom arches, projections from the building mass and a facade with a sense of grandeur and cultural significance. Another subtle nod to Islamic architectural principles is the installation of large setback windows that allow for plenty of natural light while maintaining intellectual modesty.
Designing the ICCIA with the trapezoidal waterlogged site was challenging to control as it had to accommodate a large number of office spaces along with parking facilities. The design had to represent the programmatic brief that it should be simple and precise.
This carefully designed ICCIA building reflects HFA’s principles of timeless, simplicity, and functionality while skillfully addressing the site’s limitations. But by adding essential Islamic design components, it conveys a sense of grandeur and cultural significance. In addition to being a useful workspace, the building represents the goals and ideals of the ICCIA.
